Abstract
In this paper, we aim to investigate the modes of sense construction in four advertising texts published in 1970 in Veja magazine, which advertise the issues of the History of Brazilian Popular Music. We are interested in evidencing the discursive strategies used to sell a product when the poster boy is black, when he is non-black and when he is white. To achieve these objectives, theoretically, we are affiliated to the assumptions of Pêcheux’s French discourse analysis (1999; 2014); to reflections about race relations Almeida (2019), Bento (2016), Schucman (2014), in addition to issues concerning advertising, Gastaldo (2013), Vestergaard and Schroder (2000) and Cultural Studies, Hall (2016). The relation between the black person and advertising in the 1970s is one of almost total silence, an extension of the racism that pervades the social structure. In the rare moments when this silencing is broken, it is relevant to reflect how the conditions of existence of this discourse are organized, which unites verbal and non-verbal materiality to provoke consumption needs in a target audience aligned with the editorial identity of the magazine and with advertising that considers the racial aspect as a determinant.
