Esse artigo tem como objeto as origens da instrução na América portuguesa no período do governo de Mendonça Furtado, Governador do Grão-Pará e Maranhão entre 1751 e 1759. Para tal utilizará como metodologia a pesquisa documental, tendo como fontes primárias as instruções ao governador Mendonça Furtado e o Diretório dos Índios de 1757 que, articulados, deflagram um amplo processo de mudanças culturais e educacionais que culminaria, dentre outros acontecimentos, com o surgimento de escolas geridas pelo Estado português no território brasileiro em substituição às escolas elementares jesuíticas, antes mesmo da reforma de ensino do Marquês de Pombal em 1759.
This article has as its object the origins of instruction in Portuguese America during the period of Mendonça Furtado, Governor of Grão-Pará and Maranhão between 1751 and 1759.
