- ItemAfter in defence of the school: an interview with jan masschelein and maarten simons(2017) CARVALHO, Alexandre Filordi de; AQUINO, Julio GroppaThe intent of the interview with the authors of In defence of the school was debating the reception of such book in the context of educational research in Brazil. On one hand, the very outreach of the idea of defending the school was inquired, taking into account the socio-historical context which still circumscribes the school in the functional register of State apparatus. On the other hand, and as a consequence, once again was called into question the book’s theoretical horizon, capable of substantiating the defence of the school as res publica. On both fronts, the interview ends up shedding some light to a triple problematization: a) the impasses as to what arguing in favor of formal education nowadays means; b) the consequences of school practice being thought only according to a theoretical-pedagogical dimension, as the authors maintain; c) the constant tension existing between the actualization of historical experiences in the multiplicity of school context and the presupposition of thinking of a general school model. Stemming from the interview, either the opponents or the proponents of Masschelein and Simons’ theses obtain new tools to rethink the ethico-political contours of In defence of the school.
- ItemDefender a escola das pedagogias contemporâneas(2017) AQUINO, Julio GroppaBeing the book In defence of the school the common thread for the reflections herein, this article treads at first an argumentative path which encompasses be it the opposition to school practices, be it their apology, crossed by a brief digression around the critical work proposed by Michel Foucault, to which the arguments align from the theoretical standpoint. The specific aim of the article is a descriptive approach of some circulating utterances in the pedagogical-scholar contemporaneity, by means of analysing the filmic piece Quando sinto que já sei, a 2014 Brazilian documentary comprised of testimonials by students, educators and visionaries of the so-called alternative schooling experiences. For the sake of adjuring certain pedagogical expedients deemed as anachronic, the film is centered in proposing allegedly innovative initiatives and strategies to teaching, to engaging its main actors and the latter to the school setting, pointing to a marked transfiguration of the typical normativity of pedagogical-scholar practices. As a counterpoint to the underlying rationality of the film and apprised of a certain vitalist skepticism, the article proposes, as its final remarks, an education by the archive, with regard to unlocking the institutive forces of the school ethos and, above all, of the teacher’s word.
- ItemEditorial Dossiê "É preciso defender a escola"(2017) CARVALHO, Alexandre Filordi de; AQUINO, Julio GroppaThe deep social-historical changes witnessed in contemporaneity impose multiple questions to school practices. On one hand, the problematic definition of a general conception of school remains suspended; on the other hand, we find ourselves face to face with the singularity of each school institution, its idiosyncrasies, particular demands, etc. Hence some unavoidable questions: which extensions and retractions the school environment has been assuming nowadays? What are the boundaries, in law and in fact, of its jurisdiction today? To what and for whom is the school destined in the coordinates of the present?
- ItemRastros de uma heterotopia urbana: o caso do Parque Ibirapuera, SP(2016) CHAVES, Ana Paula Nunes; AQUINO, Julio GroppaThis paper is based on Michel Foucault's reflections on the theme of spatiality in order to formulate a theoretical overview of the notion of space and, especially, of heterotopic spaces. Regarding the latter, Foucault proposed a unique approach by highlighting other spaces, which denote their marginal, conflicting and subversive purposes in relation to established order. By way of exploring such a general hypothesis, the paper presents the results of an investigation about Ibirapuera Park, urban icon of the city of Sao Paulo, according to two complementary work fronts: official documents on the Park and journalistic discourses about it published in the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo from 1954 to 2014. The data analyzed identified a mode of government which turns from social orthopedics to space and conduct control, by isolating deviance and economic modulation generated by it; also, it was detected that, in face of such process, heterotopic trails emerge as unexpected responses to the strategies of governing, that is to say, as creative imagination that challenge the current control mechanisms by positioning itself in the deviance and other possible modes of existence. The paper concludes heading towards the defense of new perspectives with regard to analytical work devoted to urban spatialities, in favor of a broad understanding of the links established among space, government, resistance and spatial (re)creation.
