Abstract
The teaching and learning process was affected as a result of the Covid - 19 pandemic. Suddenly teachers were faced with a reality that demanded significant changes in their pedagogical practice. In this research, we investigate how mathematics teachers in basic education in public schools are facing and developing remote teaching activities during the Covid-19 pandemic. We adopted a qualitative approach and the data were obtained from a text sent to 37 teachers of basic education mathematics in public schools, via e-mail, and answered by 12 teachers with another text. For the theoretical foundation of the collected data, we used Freirean arguments contained in the work Pedagogia da Autonomia. The results show that teachers were surprised by the new routine of daily teaching in the face of the pandemic, and at the same time they perceived the new reality as a moment of learning. It was also noted the need for actions by the public authorities in order to enable public school students to access the internet and technological resources.
