This article aims to analyze the novel Terra de Caruaru (first published in 1960), by the Pernambuco writer José Condé, in the light of the links maintained between memory and history. The theoretical references stamped in the analysis, from Sandra Jatahy Pesavento, Antonio Candido, Carlo Ginzburg, Jeanne Marie Gagnebin, Aleida Assmann, among others, proposed to reflect on the existing marks within the literary text that make it possible to refer to exteriority, having as guiding axes of investigation the mnemonic and historical biases. The Condeana narrative, set in the city of Caruaru, located in the Agreste region of Pernambuco, points to the author's biographical aspects, modeling the work dialectically by reminiscences of his childhood, which appear strongly in the narrative. In addition, in the symbiosis between the literary and the historical, the text builds the horizon of the municipal genesis and its sociopolitical daily life in the 20s of the 20th century, amalgamated by coronelismo, by the cangaço, by the human profiles, by the culture and landscaping of the northeastern interior. and the yearning for progress. With a regional trait that gives it aesthetic originality, the novel structures spaces and diegetic beings that find modes of meaning in the extratextual resources that externalize them, crossing the tracks of memory and history.
