Abstract
This paper aims at showing that the Movement of Popular Culture of Recife, Brazil (Movimento de Cultura Popular do Recife or MCP) gained renown in the 1960s as a instrument in favor of social changes. Mostly, this happened because its intellectuals transcended the common understanding about culture and popular culture, as well as the pessimism which impregnated such understanding. It is considered that the MCP could take this step in its proposals for adult literacy and cultural action, as they advocated – according to what is stated in its statute –: the research, investigation, and creative dialogue with poor workers. To illustrate these claims, we analyzed the MCP’s statute, the Reading Book for Adults, as well as Paulo Freire’s book Education, the Practice of Freedom
