The reorganization of elementary education in cycles, replacing the traditional serial organization, usually accompanied by measures that change the system of school promotion/failure, usually called continued progression, has been increasingly adopted in various public education systems. Considering the opportunity and relevance of developing research on proposals and initiatives under way in Brazil and assuming that these should represent an advance in relation to the knowledge that has already been produced and disseminated on the subject, we organize this text, which presents a survey and characterization of productions published in Brazil, from the year 1980 to the first semester of 2002. Productions published in books, book chapters and articles published in journals in the field of education were selected, favoring those of an academic nature. We also included dissertations and theses, produced in the defined period, as well as texts presented at events, totaling ninety-six titles.
