    Autonomia da escola: uma reelaboração dos sonhos e dos anseios por uma escola democrática: o caso de Pernambuco

    This article discusses the incorporation of the principle of autonomy in the public education system in the State of Pernambuco based on a survey of the documents through which, in the period from 1995 to 2002, educational policies for this same system were formulated. The research had as its starting point the understanding that the implementation of the principle of school autonomy in Brazilian educational policies resulted from the redefinition of the role of the State, which, in the midst of the productive restructuring process, came to be governed by neoliberal ideas. From this understanding, there was also the understanding that such implementation resulted from the external monitoring process that has been taking place on national educational policies, formulated throughout the 1990s. As for the researched education system, it was found that the implementation of school autonomy continued the cooptation and reframing logics that, at broader levels, have guided the neoliberal version of this principle.
