    Os planos de carreira premiam os melhores professores?

    This paper presents a discussion on the criteria for progression in teachers' career ladder. Initially, the teachers' roles among the contemporary society, as well as their importance will be discussed. Then, the teachers improvement related to their own activities will also be discussed. Later, some national and foreign researches focused on teaching characteristics which affect students outcomes will be examined. The following topic intends to identify the Brazilian legislation related to the teachers' career ladder. Finally, the criteria and characteristics of the teachers' career ladder in Barreiras City, Bahia, Brazil, are described. Nowadays, this city is on a disjunctive situation between caring about teachers' proposals and its commitment with future budgets. The conclusions of this article indicate that career ladders, are generally based on aspirations, desires and assumptions. It is suggested that these career ladders prioritize the teachers characteristics which have an effect on the students' performance, since they are teachers and schools principal aim.

    Plano de carreira e avaliação dos professores: encontros e desencontros

    This study aimed to assess if the criteria for progressing in the professors’ career of a higher education institution are the same that make a teacher good in the pupils’ view. The literature highlights many factors that influence pupils’ gains, however, it considers that the classic progressing criteria tend not to wield clearly effects on pupils’ gains. The exploratory research project used, to collect data, a questionnaire filled out by students, previously constructed, tested and approved as part of the institutional evaluation process. Besides verifying the professors’ performance from the students’ perspective, this research project related professors’ characteristics valued by the career ladder (degree, experience, seniority in the institution and academic publications) to their performance according to the students' evaluations. It was concluded that, in the institution investigated, there was no significant relationship between the evaluation of professors’ performance and the variables for progressing in career, confirming the literature on basic education.
