    ¿Dónde va el romboide?: Conocimientos geométricos que emergen a partir del uso del tangram

    In this article we analyze the understanding of geometrical figures that elementary school students put into practice when forming configurations with the tangram parts. We draw data from classroom observation of eighteen lessons in a fifth-grade class of a public elementary school located in Mexico City. We explain how this activity allows students to display numerous hypotheses, test their validity and re-elaborate them. We show how within this process, interaction among peers increases and enriches their involvement in the academic task. We conclude that the text supports the idea that learning geometrical figures necessarily implies hands-on manipulation of a variety of figures, such as those offered by the tangram. These characteristics allow students to contrast figures and therefore become aware of the properties of each one.
