    Technology has expanded man's life possibilities and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a sophisticated assistance center that reflects the potential of the technique. This study aimed to detect the effects of the use of technology in the process of caring for critically ill patients. To achieve this goal, it was decided to develop a qualitative work, using interviews. The reflections emerged from analyzes carried out from the nurses' discourse, interpreted in the light of a theoretical framework based on Michel Foucault's thought. The analysis, based on knowledge/power relationships, reveals the actions of nurses who develop skills applied under conditions carefully controlled by the "disciplinary power" installed in the hospital, a fact that contributes to establishing the profile of professionals who work at the forefront of a profession , whose essence is characterized by the care process. It was found in this investigation that nurses are concerned with the repercussions of the indiscriminate use of these “machines”, which are necessary to monitor numerous variables and maintain life; as well as the effects of this technology on the nurse/patient interaction.
