    The work aims to report the consequences that garbage has on the environment, identify how anthropic actions harm the island and verify which are the most frequent factors in the practice of irregular disposal. To this end, “in loco” surveys and photographic records were carried out to verify the amount of garbage discarded without proper treatment. The results obtained were that the island faces a serious problem with anthropic actions of improper disposal of solid waste, with areas that present leachate, a process of degradation of organic matter and significant visual pollution. It is concluded that the island of Cotijuba, due to the results presented, needs a sanitary intervention and awareness on the part of residents and visitors who frequent the place, so that other damage caused by garbage can be avoided.
