    Imagem dos intelectuais no século XXI: as dificuldades de entender seu papel social na sociedade contemporânea

    This work, by translating an intellectual concern and being born into a single objective, that of understanding what an Intellectual is today and its role in contemporary society, aims to show the ambiguous and hybrid character of the intellectual today. This objective is accompanied by some questions: who can we call, without risk of being mistaken, an intellectual in postmodern societies full of contradictions, controversies and problems? What today defines an intellectual: commitment to the universal and humanitarian cause, to a social and political cause of the poorest, media exhibitions and shows, serving a ruling class and reproducing their values ​​at the expense of the exploited, devoting themselves to writing books and articles, Do researches? The role of sociology is to understand, interpret, conceptualize, theorize and problematize the dynamics of social phenomena of which the rise of intellectuals is part. Thus, as a reflection on the status and social function of intellectuals, this article aims to discuss the image that intellectuals project today in the 21st century, to problematize their role and place in society as well as the relationships that remain between them and the media taking into account all its power of dissemination, advertising, exhibition and visibility.
