- ItemA obsessão pela excelência: universidades de classe mundial no Brasil?(2018) THIENGO, Lara Carlette; BIANCHETTI, Lucídio; De MARI, Cezar LuizIn this article, which is part of a doctoral thesis, the approximation/convergence of Brazilian higher education to the 'global trend World ClassUniversity' or University of Excellence is analyzed, from the outline of policies, programs and Institutionals Development Plans of Higher Education Institutions, starting in the 2000s. Some questions that guide the discussion undertaken here, other thanthe one that calls this article, are: Brazil, via itsHigher Education Institutions or some of them, are in the 'race' to achieve excellence or world class status in the wake of this global trend? To what or where does this movement indicate? Which universities claim to fit this model? In order to answer these questions, in methodological terms, a collection of bibliography and data was used, as well as documentary analysis, considering the understanding of historical and social totality, with its structural and conjunctural conditions. It is broadly understood that if, on the one hand, the commodification of higher education reaches exponential levels, initiatives towards the promotionof the status of 'World Class', especially in the context of the internationalization and induction of strategic areas, show that the country is also enrolled in the 'race for excellence', despite aspiring to different points of arrival if compared to prestigious universities. Thus, although some Brazilian institutions are more advanced in terms of organization and directions to world-class standards, the model is seen as a horizon to all, which has been understood as the propagation of an 'ideology of excellence'.
