    “Para formar o viveiro de bons marinheiros”as companhias de aprendizes marinheiros da Parahyba e do Rio Grande do Norte (1871-1890)

    Inspired by models from countries such as England, France and Russia, companies were created for sailors apprentices in Brazil. The first was instituted in 1840 at the Court. In 1871, the Company of Seamen Sailorswas created in the province of Parahyba and in 1873 in the province of Rio Grande do Norte. We discuss here the conditions of creation of these educational spaces in the two provinces and the constitution of a school curriculum intended for the formation of those young people. Beyond the disciplines, it is important to understand the educational practices prescribed for the organization of daily school life and the ways of controlling the bodies that should be instructed and disciplined. Methodologically, the reports of the provincial president andministers of the navy are analyzed, a space in which the proposal to “train good sailors and a profitable education for children exposed to vices and misery” was circulated.
