Abstract
This work, with a qualitative approach, whose methodology used is the bibliographic review, analyzes, from the identity, relational and ideational functions (FAIRCLOUGH, 2008), the role of discourse in the processes of identity constitution of the deaf, based on authors such as Strobel (2008), Perlin (2010), Skliar (2010), among others, who narrate historical and discursive events that contributed to the construction of deaf identity from Antiquity to Postmodernity. The results point out that, historically, two discourses confronted each other, one endorsed by the listener, who naturalized a stigmatized and stereotyped identity representation of the deaf, and another constructed from the deaf himself, which resulted in the resignification of his identity.
